The News: Six New Screenprints
September 25, 2014October 25, 2014

Gemini G.E.L. at Joni Moisant Weyl is pleased to present The News, an exhibition of six new screenprints created by John Baldessari and published by Gemini G.E.L., the Los Angeles-based artists’ workshop. Concurrently, a selection of previous editions will be exhibited in our project space, including prints from the series Eight Soups (2012), Foot and Stocking (2010), and Noses & Ears (2006). Baldessari created the imagery for The News by mining newspapers every morning for compelling images, and pairing them with his own descriptions of other photographs from the same paper. Baldessari and his staff manipulated the images and combined them with the text in his signature Sans Serif font to create unexpected, evocative narratives and social commentary. Baldessari began collaborating with Gemini in 1991, constructing collages of color photographs using a combination of lithography and screenprinting. In subsequent projects he engaged in a self-described brinkmanship - pushing and testing the limits of printmaking techniques and aesthetics. Baldessari continues to make pioneering work, developed over five decades of conceptual practice that derives its power and meaning from the juxtaposition of language and image.
