Tacita Dean on view in multiple venues internationally

September 25, 2021October 14, 2021

On view in New York through October 9th are two exhibitions of Dean’s work. In our gallery’s Project Space, it’s the final weeks of Dean’s series of eighty unique postcard collages, Pantone Pairs, and presented at the Marian Goodman Gallery on 57th Street is the debut of Pan Amicus, Dean's new 16mm film, commissioned by the Getty Center, Los Angeles.   In Europe, the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart, is hosting the premier of Dean’s hourlong 35mm film, Antigone, as well as a preview of Gemini’s forthcoming series of 15 lithographs, L.A. Magic Hour.  In London, after making history in 2018 with three simultaneous museum exhibitions of  Landscape, Portrait, Still Life, presented at the Royal Academy of Arts, National Portrait Gallery and The National Gallery, Dean once again is the “toast of the town.”   Both locations of Dean’s British gallery, Frith Street, are presenting new works, including a new film called One Hundred and Fifty Years of Painting, which takes the form of a conversation between the artists Julie Mehretu and the late Luchita Hurtado.  Also presented at Frith is a new film based upon Dean’s designs for The Dante Project, a new commission by The Royal Ballet set to receive its world premiere at London’s Royal Opera House on October 14th.

PODCAST: A Half-Century of Prints with Sidney Felsen of Gemini G.E.L.

March 25, 2020

In 1966, at the age of forty-one, Sidney Felsen moved from the world of accounting to that of art, founding the artists’ workshop and fine-art print publisher Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles. With Gemini G.E.L., Sidney quickly got to work with some of the biggest artists of the twentieth century: Josef Albers, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Man Ray, to name a few. And Gemini G.E.L. continues its work with new generations of artists, including Tacita Dean, Julie Mehretu, and Analia Saban.

In this episode, Sidney talks about how Gemini G.E.L. got started and grew into the organization it is today, sharing stories about the artists he’s worked with along the way.

Getty Acquires Sidney B. Felsen Photography Archive

September 9, 2019

The photographic archive of Sidney B. Felsen has been acquired by the Getty through the generosity of a gift made by Jack Shear.

Felsen’s photographs are personal yet their subjects are artworld personalities, ones that historians will be studying for decades to come.  The majority of the over 70,000 photographs will enter the Getty Research Institute, while a smaller selection will become part of the Getty Museum’s photography collection.   As a co-founder of the legendary artists’ workshop and publisher, Gemini G.E.L., Felsen and his camera have been present during quiet yet historic moments as artists changed the global landscape of art during the latter half of the 20th century.   Felsen’s photographs capture both private acts of creativity and more public moments of relaxation, a family album created with the eye of someone whom the artists have loved, respected and, most importantly, trusted for over a half-century.
