Terry Winters

Clocks and Clouds
February 27, 2014April 12, 2014

From February 27 through April 12, Gemini G.E.L. at Joni Moisant Weyl will exhibit Clocks and Clouds, aseries of six new lithographs by Terry Winters. This is the artist’s first collaboration with Gemini G.E.L.,the Los Angeles-based artists’ workshop.

Reflecting Winters’ interest in graphic information and symbolic languages, the complex sequencing of these prints investigates the intersection of representation and abstraction.

Winters’ title references philosopher Karl Popper’s 1966 essay “Of Clouds and Clocks,” whichcharacterizes phenomena either by the invariable mechanism of clocks or the mutable behavior of clouds. Combining systematic procedure with gestural improvisation, this series evokes a vitalized geometry of animated figures.

Terry Winters lives and works in New York City and Columbia County, New York. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Tate Gallery, London; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich; Whitechapel Art Gallery, London; Kunsthalle Basel; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. In 2013, Winters was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
