Gemini G.E.L. at Joni Moisant Weyl is pleased to present A Look Back at the Season, featuring a selection of recent publications released by the Los Angeles-based artist workshop Gemini G.E.L. in the past nine months.
In October of 2009, the gallery exhibited new work by French conceptual artist, Sophie Calle. Her project, entitled The Address Book marks Calle's first ever collaboration with Gemini.
November brought the New York debut of new work by Joel Shapiro and Richard Tuttle. Known primarily as a sculptor, Joel Shapiro's work characterized by his unique use of color and form which he employs in such a way that continuously blurs the distinction between abstraction and figuration. Boat, Bird, Mother and Child, the artist's inaugural collaboration with the Gemini workshop, seamlessly translates the same sculptural language for which Shapiro is known to works on paper.
Richard Tuttle's new series entitled Metal Shoes represents another first in a series of new partnerships forged between leading contemporary artists and the printmakers at Gemini. The prints in this series combine Tuttle’s delicately-drawn etched lines with geometric forms created by the artist’s forceful hammering of copper plates.
The gallery's spring exhibition schedule featured recently released publications by Richard Serra and Frank Gehry, two artists who are hardly strangers to the Gemini family. Over the years, Richard Serra has continuously pushed the boundaries of printmaking, challenging Gemini's printers to develop new methods and techniques for his monumental visions. His new series, Weights and Levels is no exception.
The new series of prints by world-renowned architect, Frank Gehry, marks Gemini's third collaboration with Gehry. The eleven new prints depict various architectural projects, some recently completed as well as some unrealized.
A Look Back at the Season offers visitors the opportunity to reflect upon Gemini's continued dedication to the art of printmaking.
