This exhibition spans fifty years of Claes Oldenburg's creative output, ranging from imagery precisely rendered and architecturally inspired to lyrical and freely drawn. Internationally known for his large-scale, site-specific sculptures made with Coosje van Bruggen (1942-2009), Oldenburg’s works on paper reveal how drawing is central to his creative process. Developing and reworking themes in various states, Oldenburg uses printmaking and editions as a way to explore themes of iteration, mechanical process, and object/body equivalents.
Gemini G.E.L. at Joni Moisant Weyl is pleased to present nine new screenprints by John Baldessari titled Emoji Series, on view from November 8th through January 5th. Language and communication through imagery is a longtime interest for Baldessari, as he focuses our attention on the disjunction between image, words, and their conventional meanings and usages. Emojis, small icons increasingly used as a form of electronic communication, are predominantly used in everyday digital speech by millennials.
Equals is a series of eight “wall-hangings” comprised of two sheets of handmade paper covered edge-to-edge with multiple layers of Paintstik and mounted directly to the wall with an invisible cleat system. Serra’s prints have always had a vital, integral relationship to his 3-dimensional work, as he will typically spend many hours sketching in the presence of his installed sculptures, and his close observations of them inform his larger-scale works on paper.
Gemini G.E.L. at Joni Moisant Weyl is pleased to announce a summer-long exhibition titled “Photographic Impressions.” While conceived and installed as a single presentation, the exhibition includes two distinct components: photographs taken by Sidney B. Felsen, the co-founder of Gemini G.E.L., complimented by an exhibition of limited editions printed and published by Gemini that have photography as their predominant element.
